This weekend, we celebrate one of our country’s greatest leaders in the fight for equality. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been his 86th birthday, we’ve compiled a list of musts for your weekend, from ways to pay tribute, to ways to give back, to some extra #WeekendReads for those of us lucky enough to be spending Monday away from work.
1) See the movie everyone is raving about. “Selma,” the first major motion picture to look closely at the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, recently scored Golden Globes nods in the best actor, director and motion picture drama categories. Learn how director Ava DuVernay made one of the most important films of the year, then hit the theaters to see it for yourself.
2) Give back to your own community. Why not honor the legacy of MLK by making a difference? Money has plenty of volunteer opportunities for Monday, January 19th.
3) Learn more about the legend himself. Sometimes it’s a little too easy to stray from the meaning behind a day off work. Educate yourself with TIME’s report on MLK as a child, along with Sports Illustrated’s video on how the NBA (and the world) would be different without Dr. King’s efforts.
4) Enjoy some long reads for your long weekend. Just head to this week’s #WeekendReads and open up your Next Issue app to get started.
